INDIGO-DataCloud – INtegrating Distributed data Infrastructures for Global ExplOitation

INDIGO-DataCloud (INtegrating Distributed data Infrastructures for Global ExplOitation) aims at developing a data/computing platform targeted at scientific communities, deployable on multiple hardware, and provisioned over hybrid (private or public) e-infrastructures.
The project therefore aims at developing tools and platforms based on open source solutions addressing scientific challenges in the Cloud computing, storage and network areas. INDIGO will allow application development and execution on Cloud and Grid based infrastructures, as well as on HPC clusters.

General aims

The main project objectives are:

  • The Platform: Development of a Platform based on open source software, without restrictions on the e-Infrastructure to be accessed (public or commercial, GRID/Cloud/HPC) or its underlying software.
  • The interface: Provide the interface between e-Infrastructures and Platforms.
  • Gateways and access libraries: Provide high level access to the platform services in the form of science gateways and access libraries.
  • The Software: Streamline the adoption of the software products.

CMCC Role

The ASC division of CMCC will contribute in WP2 and WP6.
In particular WP2 will relate to Communities requirements analysis and gathering as well as dissemination activities. Specific focus will be devoted to the climate change community (CMCC will represent the European Network for Earth System modelling).
WP6 will guarantee a simple and effective final user experience both for software developers and for researchers running the applications by providing Science Gateways, libraries and workflows solutions for big data analytics.

Expected results
  • Development of a Platform: the definition of an architecture able to leverage disparate hardware resources (from Grids, HPC systems, on-premise Clouds and federated Clouds), to process large amounts of data and to exploit the efficient storage and preservation technologies and infrastructure already available in Europe, with the appropriate mechanisms to ensure security and privacy.
  • Provide the interface between e-Infrastructures and Platforms: identify the most popular software components being used by IaaS providers, and adopt and/or develop interfaces to higher level services, focusing on the requirements of the architecture.
  • Provide high level access to the platform services in the form of science gateways and access libraries: High-level access is a necessary part for final users that will not interact directly with the PaaS/IaaS but rather via an application package or a Web/Portal/Desktop application.

Activity

The project is structured into 6 work packages (WP). Two WPs, WP1 Project Management and WP2 Definition of Support to Research Communities, will be devoted to Network Activities (NA). One WP, WP3 Software Management and Pilot Services, will be related to Service Activities (SA). Three WPs, WP4 Resource Virtualization, WP5 PaaS Platform Development and WP6 Science Gateways, Workflows and Toolkits, will work on Joint Research Activities (JRA).
