SD-WISHEES | Supporting and Developing WIdening Strategies to tackle Hydroclimatic Extreme Events: impacts and Sustainable solutions for cultural heritage

SD-WISHEES actively promotes and supports the collaboration between JPI Climate, Water JPI and national research and innovation funding members to address together the protection of cultural heritage in Europe and beyond. With this purpose, both JPIs will support the implementation of multi-annual joint activities with partners from associated and widening countries and international parties to better understand hydroclimatic extreme events and identify the best available coping solutions.

General aims

General objectives
SD-WISHEES aim to:

  • enhance cross-sector collaborations and strategic coordination between national research funding organizations (RFOs) and research performing organizations (RPOs)
  • maximize the synergy of water, climate change, and cultural heritage research and innovation within the ERA;
  • launch and monitor joint activities to measure progress towards widening;
  • address potential barriers for collaboration and enable stakeholders to participate in co-designing and co-implementing solutions or services;
  • evaluate the impacts of those joint activities on widening policies as well as EU and international policy frameworks; notably the EUGreen Deal and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
  • identify common R&I priorities toward  joint and collaborative activities enabling the market, regulatory and societal uptake of results.

CMCC role

BENEFICIARY
The Consortium established by 16 organisations including programme owners (funding agencies from Belgium, France, Georgia, Italy, Malta, UK, Kenya, Portugal and Romania), research performing organisations/ academia, foundations and private companies and CMCC is part of this Consortium.

CMCC is the leader of WP6 ‘Supporting and Widening the Market, Regulatory and Societal Uptake of R&I results’ and substantially contributes to WP2 ‘Strategic planning of activities’.

Activities

“Strategic planning of activities” in order to identify the main R&I needs on the water-climate change-cultural heritage links within the ERA and therefore drive the strategic planning of the collaboration across Europe and in widening countries, specifically including in the Balkans and Africa

“Implementation and monitoring of joint activities– TAP action” that aims to  develop the Joint Vision of SD-WISHEES

“Increase Awareness of Decisionmakers, Policymakers and the civil society through communication, dissemination and outreach actions” This activity is dedicated to the external communication, outreach and dissemination of expertise regarding the impacts of hydrological extreme events, with a particular emphasis on cultural heritage. Notably, it will increase awareness of all stakeholders, decision makers, policy makers and the civil society.

“Strengthening the ERA with widening actions: understanding the impacts on global challenges, SDGs and European policies” This activity aims at reinforcing the ERA by fostering better and widening R&I collaborations to protect cultural heritage from hydroclimatic extreme events. These impacts are expected to be exacerbated by climate change as well as by anthropic pressures. In this framework, it is planned to support and develop widening and alignment R&I strategies in terms of identification of best available solutions/best practices for cultural heritage adaptation in response to hydroclimatic extreme events with the support of relevant stakeholders and researchers.

“Supporting and Widening the Market, Regulatory and Societal Uptake of R&I results” This activity aims to identify practices and explore means of enhancing and widening the uptake of research and innovation results, including innovation pathways that enhance the science-policy-society interface. To engage stakeholders and build capacity in co-developing, co-evaluating and demonstrating instruments and activities that have been co-designed to enable, enhance and widen the uptake of research and innovation results (recognise the need for these instruments and activities to be context specific) and towards up scaling those instruments and activities for appropriate use across Europe and beyond, including specifically within widening countries.

Expected results
To enhance transnational cooperation for the protection of cultural heritage. As a first step, the project will develop a Joint Vision document that identifies common R&I priorities. To pave the way for long-term collaborations with “EU widening countries” and third parties of the EU e.g. Balkans region, Africa. To contribute to EU and international policy frameworks related to the SDGs, widening strategies and policies.
