START project will develop Coastal Situational Awareness (CSA) actions for Apulia Region (Italy), improving the awareness (and the knowledge) of coastal environment, integrating the observed systems (also in real time) with the operational and forecasting modelling.

The project
START will produce services to (i) provide early warning and rapid mapping of extreme events in Apulia coastal areas, (ii) define coastal erosion and flooding indicators, (iii) support an integrated management of harbour areas.

General aims

The general objective of “START” project is to improve and consolidate the awareness and the knowledge of Apulian coastal environment integrating the observing systems and the operational forecasting modelling in a Decision Support System for coastal areas and ports.

Expected results

Decision support systems for the coastal areas (DSS-coasts) and the main ports (DSS-ports) will be produced.

The products of the DSS-coasts are:

  • Meteo-ocean forecasting;
  • Assessment of erosion phenomena;
  • Waves and wind regimes;
  • Probability of extreme events;
  • Dynamics of sediment transport;
  • Estimation of future scenarios of coastline;
  • Production of vulnerability maps related to inundation and erosion risks;
  • Proposition of reference scenario to be adopted for coastal planning in relationship with Climate Change;
  • Criteria for ICZM.

The products of the DSS-ports are:

  • meteo-ocean forecasting;
  • assessment of water exchange and sediment accumulation;
  • services for navigation safety;
  • early warning system for extreme events;
  • estimation of downtimes intervals;
  • evaluation of level of flooding and inundation of pears;
  • assessment of the level of vulnerability of the ports to the risk of sediment accumulation;
  • support to the planning of ports infrastructure.
