Energy systems and environment

(University of Salento)

The Ph.D. program in Energy systems and Environment is divided into four courses:

  • Components with low environmental impact
  • Energy systems with low environmental impact
  • Environmental problems of the energy transformation systems
  • Use of alternative energy

The objective of the Ph.D. program is to give to researchers the possibility to work in one of the strategic sectors of the national development which is represented by the interaction between energy systems, machines and environment.

In particular this course aims to:

  • teach to young researchers in the energy-environmental sector not to forget every part of the problem during the planning phase of the research, even though there will be approximations and uncertainties in the final result;
  • provide an accurate preparation in the main themes of energy and environmental planning to understand and evaluate complete scenarios and horizons on interaction between society and energy problems, the dynamics of market, the irreversible rise of oil prices and the need of balance between the developing regions and the industrialized regions;
  • provide an high-qualificated staff (that clearly knows the problems of the transformation systems of energy and environment, of their correct use and of their planning) to centers and/or laboratories of public and private organizations, industries of any sector, organizations of control and territorial planning.

The training program is characterized by some institutional courses that aim to integrate the preparation of each Ph.D. student, during the first year every student must choose a tutor and agree on a detailed research program with him. During all the years of the Ph.D. program there will be some cycles of specific seminars on the activities of each student and single seminars that aren’t strictly linked to the research activities of the students but have a function of interdisciplinary training.

This Ph.D. program also includes a period (from six to eighteen months) of scientific activity in a foreign country.

Partecipants: Since 2007 34 students are enrolled in this program and 30 students have obtained the Ph.D.
