SRACC-CAMP-ADAPT: Supporting the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for the Campania Region

CMCC supports the Campania Region in designing and implementing its Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, providing a solid and actionable knowledge base to address the challenges posed by climate change. Through an innovative and participatory approach, the project aims to develop tools and analyses that enable effective adaptation processes at both regional and local scales.

At the heart of the initiative lies the creation of a high-resolution Regional Climate Framework, developed through climate hazard profiling co-designed to align with local priorities. This work integrates the analysis of long-term observed data series, future climate projections, and comprehensive uncertainty assessments, supporting the definition of robust, evidence-based adaptation strategies.

The analyses and tools produced will be made available to the community via the Dataclime platform, fostering widespread use and raising awareness among citizens, institutions, and stakeholders.

Furthermore, CMCC will actively support regional experts within the Working Group (GdL) tasked with developing the “Regional Climate Risk Analysis.” This initiative will focus on identifying and understanding potential impacts within the planning area under various climate scenarios and identified vulnerabilities. Finally, CMCC will provide technical and scientific support for communication and awareness-raising activities, promoting inclusive stakeholder engagement through protocols successfully implemented in previous and ongoing European projects (e.g., Adaptation Agora).

General aims

To support the Campania Region in developing the guidelines Document for the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy through studies and research on topics of shared interest. At the same time, the initiative enables the CMCC Foundation to expand its knowledge base and expertise in conducting analyses, research, and both scientific and applied activities focused on climate change impacts, the development of adaptation strategies, and stakeholder engagement.

CMCC role
CMCC supports the Campania Region in designing and implementing the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. It provides scientific and technical expertise for the assessment of climate hazards and risks, adaptation planning, and stakeholder engagement, leveraging purpose-fit datasets and information and utilizing the Dataclime platform to ensure broad access and use of the developed analyses.

Activities

  • Support for the selection and methodological definition of climate indicators to be included in the climate profiling.
  • Analysis of observed trends for selected climate indicators using high-quality observational datasets.
  • Assessment of future climate conditions through high-resolution datasets (EURO-CORDEX, CMIP6, and CMCC’s 2-km simulations), including uncertainty evaluations.
  • Development of dynamic maps and climate indicators at municipal and provincial scales, made accessible via the Dataclime platform to promote broad usability and awareness.
  • Technical and scientific support to the activities of the Technical Working Group (WG), involving CMCC experts in climate risk and adaptation.
  • Organization of three technical workshops to build the capacity of regional staff in using climate tools effectively.
  • Development and customization of digital materials for communication, engagement, and participation, integrating tools and approaches from the European project Adaptation Agora found by Mission Adaptation program.

Expected results
The initiative will deliver a solid knowledge base and operational tools to support the Campania Region throughout its climate change adaptation process. Through a co-designed approach, it will develop climate hazard profiling specifically tailored to support regional climate risk analyses. The resulting insights will be made accessible via the Dataclime platform, fostering widespread use and raising awareness among stakeholders and local communities. In close collaboration with the Regional Working Group (GdL), CMCC will provide advanced technical expertise to guide climate risk assessments and the formulation of effective adaptation strategies. Furthermore, stakeholder engagement activities will lay the foundations for an inclusive and participatory adaptation process. The expected results are aligned with the objectives of the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change and promote methodological innovation through advanced digital tools, high-resolution analyses, and stakeholder engagement protocols successfully applied in European contexts.
