Building the Generation Ocean in Italy

126 participants and 26 new ideas: this is the result of Oceanthon, the first hackathon to raise awareness about the ocean’s key role in creating a healthier, more resilient and sustainable future. The UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO), and CMCC Foundation – Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change, with the support of Hack for Italy, launched the Oceanthon to find innovative solutions to ocean related issues.

What’s the Oceanthon? It’s a digital hackaton to engage students, researchers, developers, communication, economy, marketing and design professionals and all the people that want to actively contribute in the design and development of innovative solutions to protect the ocean.

The Oceanthon took place from October 9 to October 11: three days of networking and creativity with the aim to find innovative solutions to ocean issues.

The winners will have the opportunity to work with the sponsor (e.on) in order to develop, realize and put the idea on the market. All the participants will receive a certificate of attendance, while the most interesting ideas will be uploaded in a database freely accessible to companies and people potentially interested (in the website www.decenniodelmare,it)

The winning team will be announced on October 22, 2020, during a live streaming event at Teatro No’hma of Milan, the first Italian event to officially present the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. This communication and educational event aims at create a “Generation Ocean”, that is people fully aware of the importance of a healthy ocean for the future of our planet.

Among the partners of the event: AXA assicurazioni that fosters sustainable actions and initiatives to improve its environmental footprint for more than 10 years, Qwartzo, a chemical products company challenging multinational corporations by proposing alternative and ecological solutions, Dodo di Pomellato supporting the project Tenaka to protect coral reefs.
