The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) celebrates today the World Environment Day, an annual event that is aimed at being the most important global initiative for positive environmental action.
Actually the celebration is double: this year in fact UNEP commemorates its creation, forty years ago after the Stockholm UN Conference on the Human Environment.
So, World Environment Day celebration began in 1972 and has grown to become the one of the main vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action. The 2012 theme for World Environment Day is Green Economy: Does it include you? ; the celebrations precede Rio+20 conference, even focused on green economy.

Green economy is also the topics of the WED challenge, a competition that aims to encourage everyone to arrange and execute an activity in the week of WED (3-8 June 2012) to celebrate the people’s day for the environment and to respond to this year’s theme by showing that the Green Economy does include all countries, all sectors, and everyone from all walks of life. Plant trees, encourage more energy efficient systems at work, take public transport or organize neighborhood clean ups: those are just a few examples of actions suggested to celebrate 2012 World Environment Day.
