More information

There’s a fundamental component of the Earth’s climate system, influencing regional and global climate, sea-level, marine ecosystems and the carbon cycle: it’s called AMOC, Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. While significant uncertainties remain, underscoring the need for an independent, comprehensive and policy-relevant scientific assessment, recent developments have intensified debate about AMOC: how likely is further weakening? What could the consequences be for societies and ecosystems?

This will be the focus of the COP31 “AMOC in Focus: Towards a scientific consensus to inform climate policy under uncertainty” side event, held at the Cryosphere Pavilion (Antalya EXPO Center, Antalya, Türkiye) on 10 November, from 18:00-19:30 TRT (16:00-17:30 CET).

This session, with the participation of CMCC Principal Scientific Manager Giulia Galluccio, and speakers from JPI Climate, Government of Ireland and Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), will present the ongoing AMOC in Focus initiative, a joint effort of JPI Climate and JPI Oceans and Canada involving more than 50 leading international experts.
Designed to complement and inform the IPCC AR7 process, the assessment is systematically evaluating the latest scientific evidence on AMOC dynamics, associated risks, confidence levels and knowledge gaps through a rigorous, transparent review process. It will highlight critical scientific questions and present why this matters for policies in climate mitigation, adaptation, and risk management.

The side event takes place in the broader framework of the “COP31: Connecting Antarctica, Pacific Island states, and coastal nations” panel at the Cryosphere Pavilion, scheduled for 10 November from 10:00 to 20:00 TRT (8:00-18:00 CET) and can be accessed livestreamed.

This event is one of the several CMCC contributions to COP31, the 31st edition of the Conference of the Parties (COP) organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

COP31 is a major United Nations climate conference that brings together world leaders, non-governmental organizations, and experts to negotiate and advance global actions to address climate change. The conference will focus on implementing international climate agreements and promoting sustainable development through priority actions to tackle the climate crisis.

All side events hosted by the COP31 Cryosphere Pavilion will be recorded and livestreamed; consult YouTube channel link.
