General aims
The objective of this project is to provide a preliminary analysis of the indirect economic impacts of climate change on the Finnish economic system, using a Computable General Equilibrium methodology. The study focuses on Finland and on those sectors of the Finnish economy and society that are both international in scope and might be affected by climate change through different direct and indirect pathways.
CMCC Role
- construction of an economic benchmark for the Finnish, the EU and the global economic system with the ICES CGE model;
- evaluation of a set of potential impacts arising from climate change based on the existing literature, integrated, when/where possible, with specific information on Finland;
- analysis of the macroeconomic-indirect implications of climate change for the Finnish economy.
Expected results
- report on the implications for Finland of the international dimensions of climate change describing and exploring the pathways that appear to be of particular significance for a number of important sectors, including a discussion on the differences and similarities across sectors;
- preliminary economic analysis using a CGE model to explore particular vulnerabilities;
- organisation of a workshop for discussing the findings and implications for policy makers.
Activity
- development of a systematic approach for examining the pathways through which indirect impacts might arise;
- identification and characterisation of different types of pathways, including a discussion of uncertainties, potential impacts and policy considerations;
- preparation of a brief overview on the international ties of sectors in the Finnish society and relevant observed and projected changes in areas that are of significance for Finland.
