General aims

IS-ENES2 further integrates the European climate modelling community, stimulates common developments of software for models and their environments, fosters the execution and exploitation of high-end simulations and supports the dissemination of model results to the climate research and impact communities.
IS-ENES2 also underpins the community’s efforts to prepare for the challenge of future exascale architectures.
IS-ENES2 combines expertise in climate modelling, computational science, data management and climate impacts. The central point of entry to IS-ENES2 services, the ENES Portal, integrates information on the European climate models and provides access to models and software environments needed to run and exploit model simulations, as well as to simulation data, metadata and processing utilities. Joint research activities improve the efficient use of high-performance computers and enhance services on models and data. Networking activities increase the cohesion of the European ESM community and advance a coordinated European Network for Earth System modelling.

CMCC Role

CMCC is involved in:

  • WP2 ENES strategy
  • WP3 Towards next generation models
  • WP4 Earth System Modelling Environments
  • WP5 Data Networking
  • WP6 Innovating on climate modelling
  • WP9 Multi-model, multi-member high resolution Earth System Models
  • WP10 Performance benchmarks for coupled climate models
  • WP11 Developing software infrastructure for data archive services

Expected results

Climate change raises two fundamental challenges for the ENES scientific community:

  • to improve our under standing and prediction of climate variabilità and change, including anthropogenic climate change, requires the analysis of the full complexity of the Earth system, i.e., the physical, biological and chemical dimensions coupled together
  • to improve our understanding and prediction of the impacts of climate change in all their socio- economic dimensions requires more accurate predictions on decadal timescales with improved regional detail and enhanced interactions with the climate change impact community. This will be particularly required to prepare for adaptation to climate change

Activity

The activities are structured in two main areas: computational issues and data management.
One of the first activities is to prepare the climate community for exascale and better connect those working on climate models by establishing some code convergence and shared understanding of divergent codes. We will promulgate best practice model development to support the running of these codes on the massively parallel, unreliable, heterogeneous machines we expect in the exascale future.

Moreover the project aims at developing and running a set of coordinated multi-model, multi-member (M4) coupled climate simulations, at high resolution (HR).
The project include salso the development of a framework and a suite of real application benchmarks freely available via the ENES Portal, to computer vendors and high performance computing centres
From the data management point of view the project aims at enhancing the existing data archives services by delivering enhancements on four key service packages: Core data management upgrades; Metadata Services Package; Data access services for climate impacts; System monitoring.
