MYOCEAN2 – Prototype Operational Continuity for the GMES Ocean Monitoring and Forecasting Service

MyOcean2 will ensure operational continuity and extension of the existing EC/FP7 MyOcean (2009-2012) services for the 2.5 year period from April 2012 to September 2014.

Duration
30 months from 01/04/2012 to 01/09/2014

General aims

The main objective of the MyOcean2 project is to deliver and operate a rigorous, robust and sustainable GMES service component for Ocean Monitoring and Forecasting in continuity with past and ongoing initiatives in the GMES and EU marine research framework, and thus help implement a stable and sustainable system configuration, including both service and organisation, to enable the GMES Marine Service operational phase to begin in late 2014.

Expected results
  1. production of a set of validated global ocean re-analysis for the physical and biogechemical state of the ocean over the period 1992-2012;
  2. production of ad-hoc user documentation and synthesis reports to facilitate and encourage the use of the re-analyses;
  3. improvement of the CMCC OceanVar assimilation scheme with the inclusion of new types of observations and new background error covariance models.

Activity

CMCC is WP leader for WP18 and member of the Executive Committee. CMCC participates also to WP4, WP10 and WP19.
The overall goal of  WP18 is to improve, harmonize and consolidate the work done in MyOcean concerning the production and assessment of global and regional re-analyses. The objectives are:

  1.
to produce reprocessed satellite and in-situ data sets and validated re-analysis of the 3D ocean state (physical and biochemistry) for Global and European Regional seas;
  2. to demonstrate the capability of MyOcean2 to provide specific products (e.g. indicators) and foster intermediate and downstream services for the benefit of users with regional and European environmental assessment responsibilities.

In WP4 CMCC participates in the outreach activities, in particular with EEA and new groups, to ensure that the MyOcean2 products are well known and adapted to user needs. CMCC contributes also to the preparation of a dedicated user workshop.
In WP10 CMCC develops a variational data assimilation scheme with the inclusion of new assimilated data sets (such as Level 3 SST, satellite SLA from TAPAS (Tailored Altimetry Products for Assimilation Systems) and floats trajectories).
In WP19 CMCC contributes to the improvement of data assimilation schemes with the development of ensemble protocols to specify more realistic background error covariance models and analysis uncertainties.
