CMCC Principal Scientist, Paola Mercogliano, participates in the CINI HPC Summer School, sharing her expertise in how data can support decision-making. The Summer School offers an intensive program on the entire hardware and software stack. This co-design perspective is essential for designing High-Performance Computing (HPC) solutions and accelerating data-centric workloads. This edition will focus on innovative architectures and the most recent programming models, tools, and libraries for exploiting heterogeneous platforms embedding high-throughput accelerators. Some successful career stories in HPC will enrich the training offer.
From Data to Decisions: The Power of HPC in Climate Science

High-Performance Computing (HPC) is essential for modern climate science, helping us process and store the huge amounts of data needed for weather forecasts and climate projections. To understand local changes and their impacts, we need climate data at very high resolution—down to kilometers and hours. This level of detail is crucial for assessing risks and supporting decisions on adaptation.
Storage and data management are just as important, allowing us to analyze years coming from different climate simulations and better estimate uncertainties. This is key to providing reliable information for sectors like infrastructure, water management, and health.
Machine Learning (ML) is also transforming how we work, helping refine models and improve forecast and projections. By combining HPC, ML, and big data, we can deliver more precise and actionable climate inforamtion, ensuring that decision-makers have access to the best possible information for building a more resilient future.
