More information

The workshop “Science and Innovation for Coastal Resilience” – taking place on the 22nd of May as part of European Maritime Day 2026 in Limassol, Cyprus – will present the GOOS and Ocean Decade Programme CoastPredict, together with its implementation framework, the GlobalCoast Network, whose Secretariat is hosted by CMCC.
In particular, the workshop will focus on CoastPredict’s best practices, innovative tools, and solutions for coastal resilience, illustrating how improved early warning systems, climate downscaling, and digital twins of the coastal ocean can support the future of EU coastal and island communities. Participants will discuss priority risks, community needs, and opportunities across the GlobalCoast Network, which currently includes more than 200 Pilot Sites worldwide, while also drawing on solutions developed through EU-funded projects. The workshop is expected to help identify actions to strengthen local resilience, inform the EU Ocean Pact and strategies for coastal and island regions, and enhance cooperation between the scientific community and local stakeholders. The workshop will be structured around panel discussions involving participants from EU and international Pilot Sites. Practical examples, case studies on coastal resilience, and questions addressed to the audience will help foster collaboration and highlight key priorities. Visual engagement tools, such as Slido, will also be used to facilitate interaction.
The speakers of the workshop are:
– Nicolas Segebarth, European Commission, DG Research and Innovation – Healthy Oceans and Seas Unit, Policy Officer
– Giovanni Coppini, CMCC Foundation
– Joanna Staneva, Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon (Germany), Head of the Hydrodynamics and Data Assimilation Department
– Serena Lezzi, CMCC Foundation
The workshop will be held in person at the Carob Mill event premises, located in the old town of Limassol.
