The project aims at providing products and services for all marine applications: Safety, Resources, Environment and Climate, through a sustainable service for Ocean Monitoring and Forecasting validated and commissioned by users.
General aims
- set up a concerted and integrated pan-European capacity for ocean monitoring and forecasting, using nationally-available skills and resources
- demonstrate the operationally of the system, based on a “service oriented” organization, according to the European quality standards, and to achieve operational qualification and eventually qualification of Service
- bring a new pan-European value for the benefit of the marine service providers on duty at national or European levels
- contribute to the long-term sustainability of this pan-European capacity
- provide observations, analysis and forecasts describing the physical state of the ocean
- contribute to research on climate by providing long time-series of reanalysed parameters
CMCC Role
The ANS division is involved in the production of qualified global ocean re-analyses (hindcasts) of the past variability on seasonal to decadal time scales. The optimal reconstruction of the dynamical ocean using remote sensing and in situ measurements recorded during the past 20-50 years will require well-tuned systems including new developments (i.e., the 3DVAR in our case) to comply with the expected applications from the re-analyses. In particular, CMCC will be part of a consortium of partners which will use the global configuration of NEMO code with a resolution up to 1/4° to perform multi decadal reanalysis using different assimilation schemes.
