PLACES – Pluvial flood hazard and risk assessment and mitigation in European cities

The project will assess pluvial surface flood hazard and risk in urban contexts that arise from extreme precipitation events, and design individual and collective incentives for behavioral and land-use changes that lead to a tangible reduction of pluvial risk.

Duration
6 months from 01/08/2017 to 01/02/2018

Coordinating organization
  • CMCC - Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici

CMCC Divisions

General aims
  • explore efficient and scalable pluvial flood hazard, risk mapping and assessment services in urban context;
  • analyse financial and economic incentives for behavioural and land-use changes that are instrumental for reducing the pluvial flood risk.

CMCC Role

CMCC is coordinator of the project.

Expected results

Design of a climate service that assesses the pluvial flood hazard in urban context.

Activity

The project activities are divided into 3 Work packages:

  • WP1 is devoted to explore the technical specification of the service demand;
  • WP2 will explore the technical solutions to assessing pluvial hazard and risk in urban context, and explore how the costs of hazard assessment could be reduced by using geomorphic and other landscape indices;
  • WP3 will explore financial and economic incentives for individual and collective risk reduction, through review and consultation with public (urban planning) and private (insurance) bodies.
