MAGICA-FERS course
20 – 24 April 2026 | Bertinoro, Italy
More information

The course “Open Science in Practice for Coastal Ocean Data Analysis and Visualization” focuses on the practical application of Open Science principles to coastal ocean data analysis and visualization, using numerical models as well as in situ and satellite observations within cloud-based environments. In the context of the rapidly increasing availability of climate-related data, the course addresses key challenges related to data use, management, and sharing in support of sustainable scientific research.
The course is designed to provide participants with practical knowledge on how Open Science concepts can be implemented through cloud-native workflows applied to their own research datasets.
Organized by the CMCC Foundation, the course is delivered within the framework of the MAGICA Project and is run under the FERS School . It is organized in collaboration with CoastPredict, a Programme endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade and affiliated with UNESCO-IOC’sGlobal Ocean Observing System (GOOS).
Application deadline: 8 March 2026
Application form
The intensive, week-long training is addressed to a maximum of 20 students and early-career researchers. The programme is highly practice-oriented and provides hands-on experience in the analysis and visualization of coastal ocean data in a cloud-based environment.
Particular attention is given to Open Science practices and the FAIR principles, with the aim of supporting the development of reproducible, well-documented, and shareable research outputs. Participants will work with Jupyter notebooks and open-source tools to develop transparent and collaborative workflows that facilitate data sharing, version control, and long-term reusability, in line with international best practices.
By the end of the course, participants will have acquired practical experience in cloud-based coastal ocean data analysis and visualization, together with a solid understanding of FAIR data management, reproducibility, and the integration of Open Science principles into research workflows.
Organized by:
Within MAGICA project, the School is organized by CMCC Foundation through its Advanced Training and Education Center (ATEC), and run as part of the Future Earth Research School (FERS) initiative.
MAGICA – “MAximising the synergy of European research Governance and Innovation for Climate Action” – is a 4-year Coordination and Support Action funded under the Horizon Europe programme. It accelerates the development and transfer of climate knowledge from science to policy and practice within the European Research Area. The project’s ambition is to guide future climate research, and to enhance research and innovation within the scientific community on climate change priorities.
The Future Earth Research School (FERS) is a permanent CMCC Foundation initiative. It offers high-level scientific courses to equip early-career researchers and professionals with the tools and skills to understand and anticipate future global environmental challenges. Through its activities, the school creates a dynamic environment where researchers and international experts come together to collaborate and share experiences on different multidisciplinary aspects of research, building a fertile ground for innovation and new research pathways.
