COMEDI: COpernicus Marine services with Enhanced Data assimilation and improved Interoperability

Operational ocean data assimilation systems have strict requirements for stability and may therefore lag behind the latest development from the research community and from neighbouring forecasting centres. To overcome this limitation, COMEDI brings together experts from the Copernicus Marine forecasting centres to modernise and harmonise our data  assimilation practices. COMEDI will enhance the data assimilation software with innovations such as multiscale, non-Gaussian, and Artificial Intelligence approaches to stay at the research forefront. COMEDI will also unlock the potential to assimilate new types of observations, including SWOT, Sentinel-3 reflectance data, Sentinel-3 Next Generation wide-swath altimeter data, and brightness temperatures from Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer (CIMR).

General aims

COMEDI will enhance each MFC’s DA software with novel DA methods such as multiscale, non-Gaussian and Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches, making better utilisation of the available observations while taking into account the specific requirements of marine DA. It will offer new capabilities to assimilate new types of satellite observations such as altimeter from SWO, and brightness temperatures from CIMR. This effort will keep all MFCs at the forefront of ocean monitoring and prediction at an international level. COMEDI will also improve MFCs’ interoperability by establishing Joint Development Teams (JDTs) and developing interoperable tools, which will lead to increased exchange of research innovations across MFCs and faster and easier uptake of these innovations into operational software. The project will demonstrate the use of innovations in real-MFC operational context and engage CMEMS stakeholders, ensuring that CMEMS users can fully benefit from these advancements.

CMCC role
CMCC applies its specialized expertise to advance data assimilation and marine forecasting through the following contributions:

  • Cross-Cutting: Participating in the AI and Software Joint Development Teams (JDTs).
  • WP2: Leading hybrid covariance development and contributing to ensemble generation techniques.
  • WP3: Interfacing 3DVar with AutoEncoder architectures.
  • WP4: Assimilating high-resolution altimeter observations.
  • WP5: Developing observation operators for OceanVar2 and delivering quality control tools.

All developments will be demonstrated in the MED-MFC and BLK-MFC physical components, directly leveraging the Copernicus Marine Service.

Expected results
Copernicus Marine Monitoring and Forecasting Centers will be upgraded with advanced data assimilation methods, satellite capabilities, and interoperable tools to keep the Service at the forefront of international ocean prediction.
