This project is funded by Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea and coordinated by CMCC. The objective of the project is to study and monitore the mediterranean biodiversity.
Durata
30 months da 01/12/2008 a 01/06/2011
30 months da 01/12/2008 a 01/06/2011
General aims
The project is divided into 3 Workpackages:
- WP1 – Coordination of the project
- WP2 – Study of biodiversity of the Mediterranean plants to mitigate the effects of climate change and the desertification
- WP3 – The impacts of biological invasions and of climate change on the biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea
CMCC Role
CMCC coordinates the project and, in particular, it is responsible of all the activity of management relative to Workpackage 1.
Activity
The Workpackage 1 is divided into 5 Tasks:
- Organization and web site
- Kick-off Meeting
- Meeting of the First Year
- Final Meeting
- Reports
The Workpackage 2 is divided into 10 Tasks:
- Evaluations and pilot plantation
- Study and collection of vegetable genetic resources
- Characterization of the genetic resources
- Comparative molecular and metabolic study of the reply to the saline stress
- Planning of a middle plantation for the sequestration of carbon
- Obtainment of sugary syrups from unconventional wooden-cellulosic biomasses
- Bioconversion of the sugary hydrolyzed in ethanol by using ethanologenic micro-organism
- Genetic improvement of the selected stumps
- Formulation of the fermentative process for the production of bioethanol
- Climate scenarios for the Mediterranean area
The Workpackage 3 is divided into 7 Tasks:
- Revision of change in distribution and abundance of thermophile alien species in the central and eastern Mediterranean in the last 20 years according to the change of superficial sea temperature and of a tridimensional hydrodynamic model
- Revision of the distribution of thermophile species in the Ligure Sea in the last 20 years and analysis of climate data
- Characterization of trophic and reproductive parameters in populations of invasive species and of native species that are ecologically similar
- Evaluation of the incidence and diffusion of alien species of parasites in native fish species
- Evaluation of the genetic diversity of key thermophile species through molecular tracers
- Monitoring of the reproduction of the settling and recruitment of the marine sessile invertebrates, belonging to alien and native species
- Monitoring of the distribution, reproduction and of the thermal limits of native and alien hydroids in the eastern and central Mediterranean
