GLORI4DE: GLObal-to-Regional ICON Digital Twin integrated with Destination Earth

ECMWF has opened the Request for Proposal (RFP) DE_360_A1 to extend Agreement ECMWF/DESTINE/2022/DE_360 (hereafter “DE_360”) already ongoing with CINECA, in order to implement and demonstrate the interoperability between Destination Earth Digital Twin Engine and the GLORI implementation based on the ICON model.

General aims

The main aim here is to demonstrate the possibility of technology transfer between developments within DestinE, notably the interoperability with the Digital Twin Engine, and other European regional DTs of national interest, which are developed outside DestinE. The regional DT chosen is Global-to-Regional ICON (GLORI). The funded activities proposed here aim at implementing interfaces between GLORI and DestinE Digital Twins and architecture (Digital Twin Engine, data lake), which are being run on the same EuroHPC platform (Leonardo).

CMCC role
Sub-contract agreement between CINECA and CMCC. CMCC is the leader of Work Package 6 “Use case with regional focus” which aims to achieve the development over the Mediterranean area of an ICON based coupled ocean-atmosphere system. CMCC and CINECA will demonstrate the coupling to the DestinE DTE and data lake of a coupled GLORI based twin over the Mediterranean Sea on the Leonardo system.

Activities
i) Development of a configuration of the ICON model at high resolution (1km) over the Mediterranean region ( the domain will be the same of the GLORI Project);
ii) Identification and setting of an ocean component model for the Mediterranean sea;
iii) Demonstration of the coupling to the DestinE DTE and data lake of a coupled GLORI based twin over the Mediterranean Sea on the Leonardo system.

Expected results
i) Description of the atmospheric and ocean component of coupled GLORI regional twin of the Mediterranean area (Report, 31/10/2024, CMCC)
ii) Demonstrate the use case of a coupled GLORI regional twin over the Mediterranean Sea and showcase interoperating with the DestinE DTE. (Prototype, 30/04/2025, CMCC)
