HYRAD4CC: Scientific Support for the Development of Very High-Resolution Reanalysis Datasets over Italy for Operational Applications in Mountain Environments

HYRAD4CC (Hypermeteo and Radarmeteo for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation) is a research project funded by the Autonomous Province of Trento under Provincial Law 6/2023, aimed at developing advanced meteo-climatic data products and services for mountain territories. Within this framework, CMCC is responsible for the delivery of specific technical-scientific outputs, namely the production and quality assessment of very high-resolution reanalysis datasets over Italy, developed through advanced regional climate modelling and Artificial Intelligence techniques. These outputs, covering the period 1996–2025, are provided to Hypermeteo and Radarmeteo for their own downstream operational and application-oriented purposes.

General aims

The project aims to produce scientifically robust, very high-resolution meteo-climatic datasets for the Italian national domain, with specific focus on mountain environments where complex orography significantly influences atmospheric circulation and precipitation patterns. Key objectives include: (1) evaluating and selecting the most suitable modelling approach for very high-resolution reanalysis production at up to ~2.2 km resolution; (2) producing a very high-resolution reanalysis dataset covering the period 1996–2020; (3) extending the dataset to 2021–2025 using Artificial Intelligence algorithms, achieving a continuous 30-year temporal coverage; (4) validating all produced datasets against observational data and reference benchmarks; (5) supporting post-processing activities for industrial applications; (6) disseminating results through scientific publications and stakeholder engagement.

CMCC role
CMCC contributes as scientific partner through its REMHI Division, providing advanced expertise in high-resolution climate modelling, dataset development and validation. Its role focuses on methodological assessment, production and temporal extension of high-resolution national datasets, scientific quality assurance, and dissemination of results through conferences and publications.
