NECCTON- New Copernicus capability for trophic ocean networks

The ocean’s biodiversity supports the livelihoods of over three billion people, providing vital services, including food and nutrient cycling. However marine policy and resource management do not yet consider the latest scientific advances, even when the state-of- the-art operational models of the European Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) are used. The project’s objective is to enable CMEMS to deliver novel products that inform marine biodiversity conservation and food resources management, by fusing new data into innovative ecosystem models that integrate biological and abiotic components, habitats, and stressors of marine ecosystems. NECCTON will inter-link new models in the CMEMS systems, thus building novel capacities to simulate higher-trophic-levels, benthic habitats, pollutants, and deliver projections of climate change impacts. We will develop and exploit new data-processing chains, supporting CMEMS’ use of novel ecosystem observations, including new hyperspectral data from satellites, as well as available acoustic, pollution and omics data. We will fuse these new data and models by using innovative machine-learning algorithms to improve models and data assimilation methods. These developments will be applied in thirteen case studies, co-designed with fisheries and conservation managers as part of our pathway-to-impact, resulting in the demonstration of Technological Readiness Level 6 of NECCTON products. The project objectives will be achieved by a team of twenty-three world-class organizations with track records for all the key project components. It includes the CMEMS Entrusted Entity and core developers, who will promote the final uptake of NECCTON by CMEMS. On project completion, NECCTON will provide CMEMS with the scientific and technical

NUBICOS: New Users for a Better ICOS

The Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) is a fully operational European Landmark research infrastructure providing standardised high-precision observations on greenhouse gases and their fluxes. The ICOS infrastructure is currently covering 16 countries with 170 stations. In this project, we will work with new users for ICOS data from satellite and modeling communities and prepare products for policymakers. We are improving sustainability of ICOS by streamlining the data pipelines and strengthening the community engagement including new members. In addition to data, ICOS is producing protocols and processes, which are now needed for the global greenhouse gases (GHG) initiative coordinated by World Meteorological Organization (WMO), thus strengthening the European leadership in it. NUBICOS will focus on four specific objectives: 1. The cooperation between ICOS and the remote sensing community will be deepened. 2. The value chain from observations to climate services will be improved. 3. The internal engagement of ICOS and the identity of the ICOS community will be strengthened. 4. The global cooperation of ICOS, particularly in the WMO framework, will be intensified.

OAeSIS – OCEAN Alkalinity Enhancement: Sustainability and Impacts across Scales

Global warming has exceeded 1.5°C as a result of anthropogenic fossil fuel emissions, making it clear that deep emission reductions will need to be complemented by large-scale Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) to meet the Paris Agreement targets. The ocean plays a central role in the global carbon cycle, storing more than 97% of the world’s dissolved inorganic carbon and having absorbed approximately 20–30% of anthropogenic CO₂ emissions over recent decades. Despite the importance of these processes, marine (m)CDR techniques remain less developed than terrestrial approaches. Among technology-based marine CDR options, Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) has attracted particular attention in scientific, technological, and policy debates. However, significant uncertainties remain regarding its effectiveness, techno-economic feasibility, environmental impacts, and governance implications. OAeSIS aims to address these key gaps by advancing understanding of the socio-economic, governance, and impact dimensions of OAE, thereby supporting informed decision-making and future climate policy development. OAeSIS has been developed within the framework of the “Land, ocean and water for climate action” work programme and will be implemented in close alignment with related funded activities, in particular with its sister topic “Monitoring the global ocean for safe, verifiable, and sustainable marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR)”.

ObsSea4Clim: Ocean observations and indicators for climate and assessments

OceanICU – Ocean-ICU Improving Carbon Understanding

The Ocean plays a crucial role in the global C cycle, taking up approximately 25% of the CO2 we emit to the atmosphere, and thus slowing the rate of climate change. The future trajectory of this sink will affect the timing and intensity of the modifications to human processes that we need to undertake in order to stabilise atmospheric CO2 at 450ppm. Our ability to measure and model this sink is limited (evidenced by significant discrepancies between measured and modelled C uptake) with the current frontier area of research being a suite of biological processes related to higher trophic level behaviour within the so called biological C pump. This involvement of higher organisms suggests that human activities (fishing, energy and mineral extraction) has the capacity to affect the ocean C sink however we lack the ability to quantitatively link direct human pressures and ocean C storage. Ocean ICU will measure these key processes and evaluate their overall significance, transferring those that are important into models that inform the IPCC process and in this way contribute to resolving the observed model data mismatch of Ocean C sink estimates. We will use the fundamental knowledge we acquire around biological systems to evaluate the ability of human interventions in the ocean to alter the carbon cycle and produce management tools that allow the tension between resource extraction and C storage to be addressed. This component will involve extensive dialogue with end users and stakeholders and lead to a Decision Support Tool that will

OFIDIAPlus: Operational Fire Danger preventIon plAtform Plus

The overarching goal of the OFIDIA Plus proposal is to enhance understanding of knowledge, accessibility, and facilitation gaps that hinder the widespread adoption of sustainable fire prevention actions in the cross-border area. The project aims to develop and demonstrate innovative tools and solutions to support policymakers and all actors in the firefighting system, promoting behaviors that prioritize prevention and ecosystem protection. The project actions target the Italian regions of Puglia, Calabria, Basilicata (Matera province only), and the Greek region of Epirus, aiming to enhance environmental resilience and quality of life.

PEERS 2: UCPM Peer review programme of disaster risk management and civil protection system

The European Commission’s Directorate General for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), under the framework of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), supports countries and regions to review their disaster risk management (DRM) policies and practices by taking stock of strengths and areas for improvements and putting forward recommendations to increase resilience. The objective of the UCPM Peer review programme is to implement, over a period of 36 months a cycle of peer reviews targeting a maximum of six countries/regions wishing to have their disaster risk management/civil protection system reviewed. UCPM peer reviews promote an integrated approach to DRM by taking a comprehensive look at risk governance, risk assessment, risk management planning, and all stages of the disaster risk management cycle. The peer review process fosters policy dialogue and coherence, facilitates mutual learning and exchange of good practice, and steers progress in critical areas for the EU cooperation on civil protection and disaster risk management. CMCC will support DG ECHO in the implementation of the overall programme, both technically and logistically.

PHAROS: Lighthouse for Atlantic and Arctic Basin

PHAROS is an EU-funded project, led by the Canary Islands Ocean Platform (PLOCAN), and implemented by a consortium of 24 organizations, which aims to provide nature-based solutions for restoring ecosystems and biodiversity while tackling climate change and human impacts in the Atlantic and Arctic maritime regions. These goals align with the European Union’s ambitious Ocean Mission objectives. The PHAROS project aligns with the European Union’s Ocean Mission by focusing on protecting and restoring marine ecosystems and biodiversity, eliminating pollution, and achieving a sustainable, carbon-neutral, and circular blue economy by 2030.

PRISMA – Net zero Pathway Research through Integrated Assessment Model Advancements

Introduction The ambition to achieve the Paris Agreement goals has led to the realization that a rapid and full decarbonization of the economy is required, involving a structural transition of the current economy and society. With the rise of quantified policy targets, policy packages, and consideration of multiple dimensions and sectors, Integrated Assessment Models with their ability to consider complex relationships and provide calibrated numerical results have become ever more important in the last decade. The PRISMA project aims to bring these models to the next level by focusing on four key areas of improvement, namely the representation of distributional justice and efficiency, innovation and finance, climate impacts and land-use implications, and lifestyle change and circularity. In these four key areas we will improve existing large-scale IAMs and sectorial models, and consider the linking of different models where applicable. Two cross-cutting shared themes across these areas are the improvement of the temporal and spatial resolution of the analysis, and the representation of disruptive and structural change in the economy. Notably we will increase the spatial granularity with a focus on Europe, and look at the yearly and in particular near term detailed modeling of rapid decarbonization pathways. The extensive model development will be co-designed through an interactive stakeholder engagement process from the beginning, and focus on model openness and usability to ensure the stakeholder and policy relevance. Moreover, PRISMA will focus in its application on the analysis of the spectrum of Fit for 55 package policies of the EU developing

PRUDENT: Promoting Green Nudging for Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry

PRUDENT aspires to revolutionize agriculture and forestry by promoting sustainable practices and innovative farming technologies. The project will explore the use of “nudges”, small changes in how farmers and foresters make decisions, to encourage them to adopt more sustainable approaches. These nudges will be tested in real-life situations alongside policy changes to see their combined effect on sustainability. Innovative tools, like web or mobile apps, will be developed to help farmers and foresters regulate their actions and make lasting changes, supporting these behaviour changes. Different types of farming and forestry systems across Europe will be studied to understand their unique challenges. The insights gained from this research will create new ways of thinking about agriculture and forestry, including social innovations, business models, and policy recommendations.

The project combines a global hydrological model with satellite observations, climate datasets, and artificial intelligence–enhanced data assimilation to generate a consistent picture of the evolution of water systems worldwide. RAWS will integrate information on groundwater, water quality, crop growth, and human water use, with a focus on water scarcity hotspots. The project is part of the Schmidt Sciences VIEW programme and brings together leading research institutions to advance knowledge and tools for sustainable water management.

RaZorEGe: Regional ocean Zooms for Extremes and impacts at Global and local scales

Regional ocean Zooms for Extremes and impacts at Global and local scales (RaZorEGe) will develop and implement Earth System Models (ESMs) capable of robustly representing regional aspects of climate while remaining affordable for efficient global multi-centennial simulation. Projections of regional climate variability, change and extremes remain challenging to simulate with ESMs for a variety of reasons, including local process representation, errors in remote teleconnections and the inherently greater variability of regional climate requiring larger ensembles. For Europe, the representation of the Gulf Stream, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and the Mediterranean are all key uncertainties for future change, while other ocean boundary currents (the Kuroshio in the Pacific and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current in the Southern Ocean) are key for East Asian and South Africa respectively. We propose to achieve this improvement through targeted developments in ocean and sea-ice models, based on understanding the relationships between regional climate indices and ocean/sea-ice model biases. We will use a range of techniques, including regional changes in horizontal and vertical resolution, as well as new parameterisations. One key aspect of the targeted nature of the developments will be to keep the model efficient enough to be affordable with Earth System complexity included, hence trying to bring together improved physical and biogeochemical processes. Once demonstrated, these enhancements will be implemented in ESMs and simulations performed that will contribute to the next Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP7) and next IPCC. The limited cost increase, and targeted process improvements will mean that these enhancements should also

RI-SCALE: Unlocking RI potential with Scalable AI and Data

Data and AI are the fuel of scientific discoveries, and Research Infrastructures (RIs) are at the forefront of this process, generating massive and increasingly more complex datasets. However, the growing size, diversity, and velocity of research data and software demand large-scale infrastructures and technical expertise from those on the user side. RI-SCALE will address this challenge by delivering Data Exploitation Platforms (DEPs). These scalable environments will co-host scientific data with preconfigured AI frameworks and models on powerful compute resources and unlock full data and AI potential for scientific users, RI operators and industry. RI-SCALE will design and develop the DEP technology with four RIs: ENES, EISCAT, BBMRI and Euro-BioImaging. DEP instances will be deployed for environmental and life sciences, validating the technology through 8 scientific and 4 technical use cases. These will run on national e-infrastructures from the EGI Federation and (pre)exascale machines from EuroHPC. RI-SCALE will collaborate with Destination Earth, EUCAIM cancer images data space, Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, EOSC and Gaia-X to ensure interoperability within the broader landscape. The project will also facilitate industry and university collaborations, provide training and consultancy events to increase the uptake of AI technologies by additional RIs and explore sustainable DEP operation models for RI communities.
