Climate change is a global challenge that severely impacts cultural heritage, nevertheless, cultural heritage can provide responses to and help limit the effects of climate change on society. The Partnership for Resilient Cultural Heritage will strengthen research on cultural
heritage to develop and promote, through dissemination and capacity building activities, innovative solutions, assessment systems, adaptation and mitigation strategies and risk management models, for transmitting cultural heritage to future generations with the aim of making Europe more resilient and climate neutral.

General aims
As a mean of tapping into the full potential of cultural heritage and of using the power of transnational collaboration as a catalyst for triggering positive change, the European Partnership for Resilient Cultural Heritage is a decade-long instrument for addressing two general objectives: on one hand, the increased research and evidence regarding adaptation strategies and the impact of climate and environmental change on cultural heritage and, on the other hand, the enhanced understanding, use and recognition of how cultural heritage can inform policies and guide implementation measures, including the role of traditional and local knowledge. In particular, RCH will strive to develop in-depth engagement with climate change researchers and policy makers through its thematic Joint Transnational Calls (JTCs) and additional activities, in order to create a long-lasting high-quality research collaboration between CH and climate science researchers and stakeholders. One domain of particular interest for such a collaboration will be the emerging climate adaptation fields which are of strategic relevance for both CH and climate science.
CMCC role
Within the consortium, CMCC is a co-leading partner for Task 2.6 “Leveraging synergies and collaboration opportunities”, which identifies large-scale initiatives, events and networks that the RCH Partnership can collaborate with, in order to create further opportunities for its communities, and helps harmonising EU-level instruments in funding and supporting research in cultural heritage and climate sciences; Task 9.4 “Aligning with global policies and multilateral frameworks”, which ensures that the RCH Partnership remains fully informed of international policy developments at the intersection of climate and culture, while also transferring the Partnership’s results into international and global arenas and Task 10.4 “Bridging Cultural Heritage with Climate research community”, which enhances the Partnership’s DEC and outputs by building strong synergies with the climate research community. Building on the networks of CMCC and JPI Climate and on their long-standing experience in engaging with climate science communities, it entails communication and visibility activities addressing both climate and cultural heritage research domains, fostering a stronger set of connections between them, and identifies shared challenges and opportunities, positioning cultural heritage research as a key contributor to climate resilience and sustainability.
CMCC also contributes to Task 5.3 “Implementing a programme of training opportunities”, which aims to enable the science-policy-society interface by focusing primarily on capacity building and fostering the exchange and dissemination of research results, experience, skills, strategies and good practices from and across relevant sectors and stakeholders of the Partnership.
Activities
The RCH Partnership is structured around 10 WPs
WP1 – Partnership coordination and management
WP2 – Mapping and strengthening regional, national and transnational ecosystems
WP3 – Joint Transnational Calls
WP4 – Engaging interdisciplinary communities
WP5 – Building Capacities
WP6 – Accelerating transfer to policy and society: a Living Labs approach
WP7 – Prospecting for a sustainable future for cultural heritage research and innovation
WP8 – Monitoring results and assessing impact
WP9 – Fostering international collaboration
WP10 – Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication
Expected results
The following results are expected to be achieved:
- Stronger scientific evidence on the impacts of climate change and environmental pressures on cultural heritage.
- New strategies, methods and tools for heritage risk assessment, monitoring, protection and climate adaptation.
- Increased use of digital technologies, including remote sensing, sensors, GIS, 3D documentation and digital twins.
- Research-informed solutions tested and demonstrated at cultural heritage sites.
- Greater integration of traditional, local and community knowledge into climate action.
- Improved cooperation between heritage professionals, climate scientists, policymakers, funders and communities.
- Coordinated European research funding through Joint Transnational Calls.
- Enhanced skills and institutional capacity through seasonal schools, workshops, conferences and knowledge exchange.
- Evidence-based recommendations supporting policy and decision-making at local, national and European levels.
- Reduced fragmentation of European heritage research through shared approaches, data and investment priorities.
- More sustainable management, financing and adaptive reuse of cultural heritage.
- Stronger community resilience, social cohesion and contribution of heritage to a fair green transition.
- By 2030, a targeted 30% increase in participating heritage sites integrating research-informed climate-adaptation measures.
