EarthGenerator first hackathon

EarthGenerator Ignite is a three-day hackathon organised in the context of the EarthGenerator project, coordinated by the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC). The event will take place at CMCC Headquarters in Lecce and will bring together project members to explore the EarthGenerator platform, a model developed within the WeatherGenerator framework, and to contribute to its further development and application.
The hackathon aims to onboard participants to the EarthGenerator model, build practical knowledge and technical skills through structured, hands-on coding challenges, and strengthen collaboration between the developer and application communities around shared next steps for the platform’s evolution.
The programme is structured around three progressive themes:
Day 1 – Introduction
The hackathon will open with introductory remarks, followed by an update on the WeatherGenerator model and an overview of the available evaluation tools. A dedicated session will present how the development of EarthGenerator is coordinated across project contributors. The day will conclude with short application pitches from participants.
Day 2 – Hands-on
The second day will focus on practical technical activities. Participants will set up their working environments and learn how to run EarthGenerator, before engaging in three hands-on challenges covering model inference and evaluation, the development of a custom Data Reader, and model fine-tuning.
Day 3 – Use Cases and Applications
The final day will focus on applications and future development. Participants will present their applications, followed by a collaborative session aimed at identifying use cases and connecting application needs with ongoing model development. The hackathon will conclude with a final challenge and a discussion of next steps for the evolution of the platform.
