Climateurope2 – Supporting and standardizing climate services in Europe and beyond

Climateurope2 aims to develop future equitable and quality-assured climate services to all sectors of society by: a) developing standardisation procedures for climate services; b) Supporting an equitable European climate services community; and c) Enhancing the uptake of quality-assured climate services to support adaptation and mitigation to climate change and variability.

The project will identify the support and standardisation needs of climate services, including criteria for certification and labelling, as well as the user-driven criteria needed to support climate action. This information will be used to propose a taxonomy of climate services, suggest community-based good practices and guidelines, and propose standards where possible. A large variety of activities to support the communities involved in European climate services will also be organised.

General aims

General objectives

Climateurope2 has three high-level objectives:
a) The development of standardisation procedures for climate services
b) The support of an equitable European climate services community; and
c) The enhancement of the uptake of quality-assured climate services to support adaptation and mitigation to climate change and variability.

CMCC role
CMCC leads WP3 – “Business innovation” which aims at:
– take stock, review, identify and analyse practice examples for the assessment of the economic, social and environmental values and benefits unleashed or made possible by the climate services.
– Emphasise how the values and benefits are created and detained to ensure long-term via.
– Explore the patterns and taxonomies of business innovations.
– Develop recommendations and guidance documents, building upon a close engagement and participation of multiple stakeholders in the climate services community.

CMCC co-leads WP7 – “Communication, dissemination and exploitation” which aims at:
– Plan, implement, monitor and adjust an effective strategy for communication, dissemination and exploitation activities in order to maximise the project visibility, increase awareness of project topics and disseminate the results.
– Use innovative formats and activities to address multiple target audiences of climate services, such as Climate Services providers, businesses, policymakers, researchers, the standards community, journalists and the general public.
– Maximise the long-term impact and sustainability of the project by providing a science-society interface platform to facilitate interaction between science and stakeholder communities.
– Improve the professional skills and train current and future climate services providers and users.

Activities
To achieve the project objectives, Climateurope2 will use approaches from social sciences and humanities, as well as extensive technical expertise, to build a community of practice for the standardisation of climate services in those cases wherein standardisation is warranted, taking the current fragmentation into account. Analysis of the different climate services components will be conducted, and the results will be then synthesised to prepare standards and recommendations. Co-production and stakeholder engagement in climate services will be addressed through the creation and support of a connected community of European climate services actors.

Expected results
Climateurope2 aims at the following outcomes:
a) Support to the implementation of the EU Adaptation Strategy and the Mission on adaptation to climate change, including societal transformation e.g. by providing standardised tools for climate proofing and increasing resilience.
b) Improved relevance of data, information and knowledge on climate change impacts and adaptation, as well as mitigation for users both in the private and public sectors.
c) Enhanced value of climate services through standards and quality assurance procedures and communication.
d) The generation of trust across supply and demand of knowledge and services, supporting the development of a market for climate services and the European climate service sector.
e) Enhanced quality, impact, equity and performance of European climate services.
f) Enhanced data and analytical tools for climate impacts, risks (including extremes, longer trends, and the combination of trends and extremes) and transition risks, as well as actionable knowledge for the formulation of recommendations, identification and appraisal of adaptation options addressing the needs of all stakeholders
g) Enhanced coordination and visibility of climate services activities.
