EOSC-Marine: Operationalizing the EOSC Node | European Digital Twin Ocean to Support the EU Mission Ocean & Waters

The EOSC Ocean & Waters Node aims at further developing and integrating the current EOSC candidate marine thematic node into the operational thematic node for marine research within the EOSC Federation, providing researchers an EOSC compliant digital environment with access to core computing capabilities (Authentication, Authorisation and Accounting, Research Catalogues and Knowledge Graph, Application Workflows, Monitoring and Helpdesk), coupled with multidisciplinary datasets and workflows from in- situ and earth observations, models, analytical tools/services, essential for responding to the needs and objectives defined by the EC Mission “Restoring our Ocean and Waters by 2030”.

The EOSC Ocean & Waters Node directly builds upon the achievements from the Blue-Cloud 2026 project and the EU initiated and funded EDITO programme that is building EDITO as the core infrastructure for the European Digital Twin of the Ocean.

General aims

The overall objective of the EOSC Ocean & Waters Node is to consolidate a marine thematic node in EOSC Federation, establishing the sustainability and governance conditions that will guide the transition towards becoming an EDITO core component for the implementation of a fully operational EOSC node. The action is championing a vision where major EU marine knowledge assets (i.e. EMODnet, Copernicus Marine, EDITO), environmental and marine Research Infrastructures are central and will be combined to establish the EOSC Ocean & Waters Node for delivering FAIR open data and analytical services that will drive marine data provision and open science developments for the ocean, European seas, coastal and inland water.

CMCC role
CMCC will contribute to the sharing of knowledge and capabilities across the EOSC Marine ecosystem by deploying the marine environmental indicators framework, supporting cross-domain collaboration and decision-making within the scientific community. The framework will offer functionalities for the browsing and visualization of newly generated outputs, and will integrate core services developed within the project, enabling indicators to reach higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRL). As part of this effort, CMCC will update the processing component for the Marine Heatwave indicator. The resulting capability will be integrated into EOSC Marine, with the expected result of providing benefit to the wider scientific community.
