FUME – Forest fires under climate, social and economic changes in Europe, the Mediterranean and other fire-affected areas of the world

A project that aims at documenting and evaluating which changes in the land or in other factors occurred in the last decades that affected forest fires in Europe and other fire-affected areas of the world to foresee future risks and impacts on the vegetation and landscapes, and on fire regimes.

Duration
4 years from 01/01/2010 to 01/12/2013
Funded by
  • European Commission, Seventh Framework Programme, Forest fires in the context of climate and social changes

General aims

Fire regime results from interactions between climate, land-use and land-cover (LULC), and socioeconomic factors, among other. These issues changed during the last decades, particularly around the Mediterranean. Our understanding of how they affected fire regime in  the past is limited. FUME will learn from the past to understand future impacts.
The approach that we will follow in FUME is:

  • to document and evaluate which changes and factors affected in the past forest fire regimes
  • to project the likely impacts on the vegetation that conform our landscapes and on fire regime, aided by the study of the past and the projections of future (XXI century, several time-slices) climate and other socioeconomic factors that could affect fire
  • to appraise current protocols and procedures for fire prevention, firefighting and the management of fire-prone areas to evaluate adaptive options to cope with them
  • to evaluate the economic costs and policies at the European level

CMCC Role

Three CMCC Divisions will be involved in FUME project: Impacts on Agriculture, Forest, and Natural Ecosysems (IAFENT), Applications and Scenarios (ANS) and Climate Impacts and Policies (CIP). CMCC is responsible of Module 1 and 2 (IAFENT), Wp leader in WP 1.2 and 2.1 (IAFENT), and deputy leader in WP3.3 (CIP). In addition is a participant in several WPs.

Activity
  • Mod. 1 Understanding the past: Recent trends in landscape change and fire occurence: disentangling the role of climate and other factors on fire: we will study how LULC and socioeconomics changed and how climate and weather affected fire in dynamically changing landscapes (IAFENT participating in WPs 1.1, 1.2, 1.3; CIP WPs 1.1, 1.3; ANS WPs 1.2., 1.3)
  • Mod. 2 Projections of future fire risk and fire regime due to climate and other social and economic changes: scenarios of change (climate, including estremes, land-use and land cover, socioeconomics, vegetation) will be produced for various emissions pathways and three time-slices during this century (IAFENT  participating in WPs 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4; CIP WP 2.1; ANS WP 2.1.)
  • Mod. 3 Adapting to change: new approaches and procedures to manage risks and landscapes under climate and social change to reduce vulnerability to fire: the adaptation options in fire- and land- management, including restoration, will be investigated (CIP WP 3.3)
  • Mod. 4 Integration, Knowledge transfer and management: FUME will use large amounts of data. This requires building a common data base. Further, a network of sites will be organized for model testing and validation. Bridging the gap of knowledge transfer, particularly with managers, will be realized by training and specific actions with users (IAFENT participating in WPs 4.1,  4.2, 4.5; CIP WP 4.1;  ANS WP 4.1).
