PERSEUS – Policy-oriented marine Environmental Research in the Southern European Seas

The overall scientific objectives of PERSEUS are to identify the interacting patterns of natural and human-derived pressures on the Mediterranean and Black Seas (Southern European Seas, SES), assess their impact on marine ecosystems and, using the objectives and principles of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive as a vehicle, to design an effective and innovative research governance framework based on sound scientific knowledge.

General aims

Well-coordinated scientific research and socio-economic analysis will be applied at a wide-ranging scale, from basin to coastal. The new knowledge will advance our understanding on the selection and application of the appropriate descriptors and indicators of the MSFD. New tools will be developed in order to evaluate the current environmental status, by way of combining monitoring and modelling capabilities, while existing observational systems will be upgraded and extended. Moreover, PERSEUS will develop the concept of an innovative, small research vessel, aiming to serve as a scientific survey tool, in very shallow areas, where the currently available research vessels are inadequate.

Expected results

Development of an explicit framework of adaptive policies including measures and recommendations that will support policymakers in leading the drive towards better management of the Southern European Seas.

Activity

CMCC is mainly involved in WP4 with the ANS and ISC divisions and WP6 with CIP and ISC divisions. WP4 main objectives are the development of scientific tools to evaluate the SES environmental status by engaging existing and upgraded remotely operated monitoring and modelling capabilities. CMCC will provide climate products to simulate the climate variability of the SES with a special emphasis on the Black Sea region where a high-resolution regional climate downscaling simulation will be done. The coupled physical-biogeochemical model of the Mediterranean Sea (NEMO_MFS16-BFM) will be used to investigate the productive capacity of the ecosystem to address the specific knowledge needs to implement MSFD and GES.

WP6 aims are to develop a specific framework for the preparation of the future implementation of adaptive policies and management schemes and promote better governance across the SES marine waters. CMCC will contribute to build a knowledge-base Adaptive Policy Framework (APF) and to manage and make this knowledge available to stakeholders and policy-makers. CMCC will also contribute to develop a specific decision support system based on a scenario planning approach to support management schemes in the coastal environment.
