AEROBO: Analysis of vulnerability and risks from the impacts of climate change on the Guglielmo Marconi Airport of Bologna S.p.A.

The intensification of extreme events resulting from climate change presents numerous challenges for infrastructure, including airports. Many observations and research activities evidences that airport are especially vulnerable to the potential impacts of climate change. Therefore, it is crucial to formulate tailored adaptation strategies that enhance the resilience of these infrastructures in the face of climate change. This research project operates within this framework, aiming to conduct a climate risk analysis to facilitate the identification of specific adaptation measures that can enhance their resilience. Following the definitions outlined in the sixth IPCC report, risk will be assessed based on three key factors: hazard, exposure, and vulnerability.

Duration

General aims

Development of a risk analysis on Bologna Airport for various climate hazards in order to support the identification of specific adaptation strategies for airport assets most vulnerable to climate change.

CMCC role
CMCC is the only partner.

Activities
The project consists of three main activities.
Activity 1 involves coordination and capacity building, including a kick-off meeting, regular technical cooperation meetings, and a final meeting to ensure effective project management and address any critical issues.
Activity 2 focuses on conducting a risk analysis by identifying and calculating climate hazards, exposure factors, and vulnerability elements such as sensitivity and adaptive capacity.
Activity 3 centres around the dissemination of the results. It includes actions to enhance and promote the innovative nature of the methodology at both national and international levels.

Expected results
The results of the project encompass the development of maps for hazard, exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. Risk maps will also be created, tailored to different climate risks, and visualized through the Dataclime platform (www.dataclime.com) with a dedicated user interface. Users will have the ability to download the results in image format (.jpeg or .png) as well as georeferenced data in raster and/or shapefile formats.
These maps will play a crucial role in identifying priority areas for action across various assets and formulating specific adaptation strategies that align with regional strategies. Each user will have access to a methodological note within the platform, providing a detailed explanation of the performed analyses. Furthermore, all analyses and findings will be described comprehensively in the final summary document, which will also include the Climate Change Adaptation Plan Guidelines.
