General aims

The specific objective 2.1 of Interreg IT-HR project AdriaClimPlus is to promote climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention, resilience, taking into account ecosystem-based approaches. AdriaClimPlus activities will be carried out at an Adriatic basin scale and with a particular focus in 7 pilot areas, 2 in Croatia and 5 in Italy, with the aim of delivering results and outputs that will better support stakeholders adaptation planning needs in the Programme area, at basin and regional scales. AdriaClimPlus integrated and scaled approach aims at advancing scientific knowledge of coastal climate change, developing digital tools to propose and test adaptation strategies and new actions for the stakeholders to take decisions on climate change adaptation, and at improving awareness about climate change effects on coastal zone environment and on local economic activities.

CMCC role
CMCC is the project lead partner, responsible for the project coordination and management. CMCC is also the responsible partner for WP2 (“Advance and implement tools and monitoring systems for adaptation in the Adriatic Basin”) and for some of the deliverables of the project (D 1.1.1; D 1.1.2; D 2.1.1; D. 2.1.2; D 2.1.3; D 2.4.1; D 2.4.2; D 2.5.1; D 2.5.2). CMCC is leading the activity 1.1 (“Assess and advance quality and accessibility of climate scenarios and simulations for the past period”) in WP1; 2.1 (“Maturity and effectiveness of adaptation methods, actions and strategies”); the activities 2.4 (“Downscaled scenario for the Adriatic Sea and its coastal areas”); 2.5 (“Validation of high-resolution scenario results”) in WP2; the activity 3.3 (Training courses for policy makers and general service providers”) in WP3.

CMCC hosts the KO meeting, the final conference and one information event open to the public in Italy and participates to many events organised in the project with other speakers and experts.

Activities
AdriaClimPlus project is structured in 3 work packages (WPs):

WP1 (“Advance Scientific Knowledge on climate change and its impacts to support Adriatic Basin adaptation”) aims at judging the state-of-art and identifying the gaps in the available data, establishing working groups with project synergies and promoting a coordinated community of coastal modeling practitioners and analysts.

WP2 (“Advance and implement tools and monitoring systems for adaptation in the Adriatic Basin”) aims at understanding coastal areas response to climate change, enhancing the observing capacity to provide next generation coastal projections and promoting a coordinated community of coastal modeling practitioners and analysts.

WP3 (“Exploiting tools and enhancing awareness about climate change impacts on coastal areas”) aims at sharing knowledge with key actors, promoting climate awareness and actionable knowledge, providing hazard tools and coordinating and monitoring resilience actions.

Expected results
AdriaClimPlus is expected to produce several outputs and results with potentials to be further developed and adapted by other target groups and territories.
In particular, AdriaClimPlus project will deliver:

-Pilot actions developed jointly between Italy and Croatia and implemented in 7 pilot areas (2 in Croatia and 5 in Italy), covering the majority of Adriatic Sea coastline of the two countries: the assessment of climate scenarios as well as regional and coastal observations and their improved accessibility, through observing and modelling activities.

-A new strategy for an efficient monitoring of climate change status and action plans will be jointly developed between Italy and Croatia from the monitoring methodologies implemented in the pilot areas, including advanced observation systems, new downscaled scenarios and methodology for extreme events identification.

-Involve both university students and policy makers/service providers to participate in joint training schemes both in Italy and Croatia on existing monitoring and projections for the Adriatic Sea and its coastal areas, new policies design, implementation of climate modeling downscaling and indicators for selecting and testing adaptation measures and how to include them in Adaptation plans.

-Public events jointly organised across borders to inform about AdriaClimPlus project results and increase awareness on climate change and local actions and solutions for climate change adaptation

-As a jointly developed solution, a web platform for provisioning of key data, information and indicators for adaptation plans will be updated and is expected to be taken up by stakeholders (e.g. policy/decision makers and service providers, including the Associated partners).
