COP30’s key themes with the CMCC at the United Nations climate conference. All the experts and events needed to explore the most critical aspects of the climate negotiations, from adaptation and forests to mitigation and innovative solutions.
CMCC, leading global research center on climate change, brings its international expertise to COP30 in Brazil. CMCC scientists’ knowledge and understanding of the latest findings from the most advanced climate studies support negotiations and decision-making on climate policies at the Conference of the Parties (COP30).
CMCC is actively involved in key topics at COP30, including forests and emission reductions, adaptation policies and solutions, the impact of climate change on health, and the resilience of coastal areas.
Below is a list (updated daily) of the events and people representing CMCC climate research in Belém.
Forests, TFFF, and greenhouse gases
At the Brazilian COP, the issue of forests is even more central to the climate debate: here, various aspects of the negotiations come together, such as policies and tools aimed at a net-zero society, the absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere, and the resulting land use changes, with deforestation, reforestation, and agriculture emerging as key issues.
Anna Pirani, director of the CMCC research program “Predicting socio-economic outcomes in a changing climate”, will participate in the negotiations as part of the scientific support delegation at COP and as moderator of the event What you can’t measure, you can’t manage: Improving GHG estimation for informed climate policy (November 14, 11:30 AM at the Italian Pavilion in Belém).
Maria Vincenza Chiriacò will participate in negotiations within the topic group dedicated to Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU).
Climate impacts and how to address them
The consequences of climate change on socio-economic systems, the distribution of responsibilities, various adaptation sectors, the vulnerability of human communities and environmental systems, and how to finance solutions and adaptation strategies are topics that the negotiation process assigns specific working groups to. At COP, these topics are the focus of detailed discussions and meetings.
Several scientists from the CMCC Institute for Climate Resilience contribute to the conference in Belém.
Caterina Guidi is involved in the working group on adaptation.
Elisa Calliari contributes to negotiations on the theme of Loss & Damage, on which she recently published the book Governing Climate Change Loss and Damage: The National Turn.
Matteo Bellotta brings CMCC’s research experience to the negotiating group dedicated to agriculture and food.
Shouro Dasgupta, member of the scientific support team for the Burkina Faso delegation, contributes to the discussions on climate and health, building on his contribution to the latest Lancet Countdown report.
Giovanni Coppini, director of the CMCC research program on “Global coasts as a new frontier”, will contribute to the event Empowering Coastal Communities: science-based solutions for resilience and adaptation (November 11, 11:30 AM at the Italian Pavilion in Belém).
The round table of the same event will be moderated by Giulia Galluccio, director of the CMCC Advanced Training and Education Center, who will also participate in the event Solutions for People and the Planet: Reimagining land governance putting people at the centre of land and natural resources (November 15, 09:30 AM at the Italian Pavilion in Belém), where Elisa Fiorini Beckhauser will also take part as a speaker.
Paola Mercogliano, who leads research on regional models and impacts at CMCC, will contribute to the event Costs of inaction for citizens, communities, and economies (November 17, 5:30 PM at the Italian Pavilion in Belém).
CMCC scientists are available to discuss specific topics of the negotiations with journalists and media.
