The CMCC is taking into consideration the possibility to hire a talented, motivated and proactive researcher to cover one open position on data assimilation.

The location is CMCC Numerical Application and Scenarios (ANS) Division in Bologna, Italy.

The primary purposes for this position is to improve a multivariate global ocean data assimilation system that is used at CMCC for both long-term ocean re-analyses and, since recently, high-resolution operational forecasting.

Estimating the state of the ocean with assimilation techniques that meld numerical general circulation model information with observations is a primary target both in the context of climate variability assessment and for forecasting purposes such as the initialization of coupled ocean–atmosphere predictions. Our aim is to improve the global ocean data assimilation system presently running in our group in order to take advantage of the most advanced techniques available within the data assimilation community.

The successful candidate will be asked to work on the computation of background-error covariances through ensemble methods. In the framework of the ERA-CLIM European project, CMCC will in facts develop optimal methodologies for ensemble generation (perturbation of observations, atmospheric forcing and model physics) in order to estimate and combine static and flow-dependent background-error covariances for use in multi-decadal simulations. Furthermore, methods for optimally initialising coupled ocean-atmosphere predictions based on ocean analyses will also be investigated. The successful candidate is expected to actively work on these research topics in close collaboration with the other CMCC researchers. He/she will also collaborate to the improvement of a very high resolution analysis system devoted to operational applications, which is at pre-operational phase at CMCC.

The desired qualifications are:

  • a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences or related disciplines and, preferably, experience in numerical modelling and data assimilation;
  • Knowledge of the NEMO OGCM will be considered a plus;
  • Knowledge of Unix and Fortran is required, and experience with supercomputers would be welcome;
  • Very good knowledge of the English language, both oral and written.

The initial appointment is for 12 months starting as soon as possible and can be renewed. The annual salary ranges from 28 to 35K Euros, comprehensive of benefits, depending on qualification and experience.
