The CMCC is taking into consideration the possibility to hire a talented, motivated and proactive Ocean Modeller to support the research and the service improvement activity.

This job announcement is a public invitation to express interest for the above mentioned CMCC Position.

CMCC is a non-profit research institution with the aim to investigate and model the climate system and its interactions with society and the environment. Its OPA division deals with the development of models and methods for interdisciplinary research on marine operational forecasting, on the development of services and applications for all maritime economy sectors, including transport. OPA contributes to the European service Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service CMEMS (http://marine.copernicus.eu) with operational model forecasting and reanalysis products for both the Mediterranean (http://medfs.cmcc.it) and the Black Sea (http://bsfs.cmcc.it). Some community models and services developed by OPA are: http://sanifs.cmcc.it, www.visir-model.net, www.sea-conditions.com, www.visir-nav.com, www.ocean-sar.com/, www.witoil.com/.

The location is CMCC – Ocean Predictions and Applications (OPA) office in Via Augusto Imperatore 16 Lecce (Italy).

This position is for Ocean Modeller (i.e., Post Degree or Post Doc for research career at CMCC) with strong knowledge of coastal processes and unstructured grid modelling, and programming skills.

The position will take on a pivotal role within the coastal ocean modelling team in implementing, developing and testing numerical models, designing and executing experiments for wave-current coupled modelling system, integrating sediment transport capability and hydrological modelling component. The activities will be focused both on research developments in ocean field and on transition to the operational forecasting activities of the OPA division. The duties will also include processing and interpreting simulation-based and observational data sets.

It is desired to hold following qualifications:

  • PhD in Coastal Engineering, Physical Oceanography or other scientific disciplines dealing with numerical modelling (e.g physics, mathematics)
  • experience in coastal ocean model development
  • good knowledge and skills in programming language (i.e Python and Fortran)
  • knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and script languages (i.e. *nix shell)
  • knowledge of parallel programming on HPC architectures
  • fluency in English

 

Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.

The initial appointment is for 24 months, starting as soon as possible.

The position is under the sponsorship of the projects: Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS); Black Sea Monitoring and Forecasting Centre (BS-MFC) Phase 2; Impressive H2020 (advanced services for ports); Sagace (Coastal modelling and marine pollution); Innonetwork of Regione Puglia; Andormeda (H2020 on maritime safety application development).

The annual salary will be ranged 28-40 kEUR for Post Doc position and 33-48 kEUR for Junior Scientist.
